Tools and methodologies for box-wing aircraft conceptual aerodynamic design and aeromechanic analysis

A way to face the challenge of moving towards a new greener aviation is exploit disruptive aircraft architectures; one most promising concept PrandtlPlane, box-wing based on Prandtl's studies multiplane lifting systems. designed accordingly Prandtl “best wing system” minimizes induced drag for given lift and span, thus it has potential reduce fuel consumption noxious emissions. For aerodynamic concepts, physic-based design needed from very early stages process, because lack available statistical data; this paper describes two different in-house developed tools PrandtlPlane conceptual design: AEROSTATE, system in cruise condition, THeLMA, aiming define layout control surfaces high devices. These have been extensively used explore feasible space architecture, preliminary correlations between performance variables, guidelines properly initialize process. As result, relevant identified rear-front loading ratio flap deflections aeromechanic characteristics low speed condition.
